Metamorphosis: Naiads & Dryads
This weeks theme is about Naiads & Dryads. For those of you unfamiliar with them, they are nymphs of the water and trees; respectively. They are most often connected with Greek Mythology. Elora, Christine and I all took these words and developed a short story around it. This time I tried my hand at poetry. It ended up sounding more like the chorus of an old Greek or Shakespearean Play. Not that I'm comparing myself to the brilliant Bard or that I'm claiming this has the eloquence or style of Ancient Greek plays.
With input from Christine and Elora, I decided to try my hand at conveying this as a play instead of a poem. I'd love to hear from you.
Are you able to visualize the scene?
Can you still feel the melody of the poem?
Are there any phrases or ideas that feel like wise words for your own life or help you see the world around you in a new way?
Wisdom From The Earth
OPENING SCENE
We see a forest full of trees and flowers. A river runs through the middle of the stage. The blue skinned NAIAD cloaked in a wispy white dress enters from stage left, while the green skinned DRYAD cloaked in a dark brown suit enters from stage right. Both of them meet in the middle, then turn to address the audience.
NAIAD
Listen to babbling brooks to hear my voice
DRYAD
Stand under a tree to feel my rejoice
We call to the gypsy, wanderer and nomad
In leaves, foam, or flowers we’ll be clad
NAIAD & DRYAD
Speaking from the earth as nymphs; both Naiad and Dryad
NAIAD
The water cycles through air, rain, water and ice
It flows with change and embraces the price
What once was solid will turn to dust and fade
DRYAD
Wise powerful trees have fallen, now decayed
NAIAD & DRYAD
But new life spouts where that old tree once gave its shade
You may say we’re not real, that we can’t be
But you’re the ones with borders we can’t see
Kings, countries, and claims are stories you tell
There’s no true claim on any forest, hill or dell
So come out and feed your soul with a powerful spell
NAIAD
Ask where you wish to spend thought and time
Is it hiding from the world or chasing that dime
DRYAD
Or something real you can take hold of
Perhaps you will need a gentle shove
NAIAD & DRYAD
Awake, get up, and cultivate a real life you will love
(repeats last line as the slowly exit off of the stage)
